Torrent site operators are afraid that Google’s plan to build an ad blocker into Chrome will sink their sites, TorrentFreak reported. TorrentFreak reported that it is already difficult for top sites to make enough money to pay for hardware and hosting. Chrome is the most popular browser on many torrent sites, and 40% of visitors already have an ad blocker installed, states the report.
“Chrome’s ad blocker will kill torrent sites,” a site told TorrentFreak. “If they don’t at least cover their costs, no one is going to use money out of his pocket to keep them alive. I won’t be able to do so at least.”
The site operator said they have tested alternative revenue streams, and ads proved to be the only viable option.
Torlock confirmed the statement, stating that running torrent sites to make a profit is going to be difficult.
“We do it for the love of it so it doesn’t really affect us as much,” said Torlock.
