A baking stall helped boost funds raised

AN EASTER Ross woman saddling up for an adventure-of-a-lifetime bike ride from Vietnam to Cambodia was given a pedal-powered kickstart to her fundraising campaign on her doorstep. Web developer Henriette Stewart has set herself the challenge of a 500km ride to raise 4000 for Highland Hospice. The Evanton-based 47-year-old is keen to repay the generosity of warm and welcoming Highlanders who have made her feel so welcome since she moved from her native Denmark in 1991, and to the great work done by the hospice.

She was given a boost when local spinning instrutor Lynn Humphries got involved in a four-hour static bike fundraising session at Invergordon Leisure Centre.

Lynn Humphries: Led the day’s marathon spin session

Henriette said: Initially we said people could give a 10 donation to take part but that they were welcome to donate more. And boy did they! About 40 people from, mostly, Invergordon, Alness and Evanton signed up and as Invergordon did not have enough bikes for that many people we then approached Averon Leisure Centre in Alness and they were happy for us to borrow as many of their spin bikes as we needed.

The day was a massive success. People were all in great spirits on the day and we even had other centre visitors come into the studio and watch us for a while and to soak up the great atmosphere. Along with baking sold, 2669 has now been raised from that event. The sponsored cycle takes place in February.

Lynn is an amazing instructor, keeps you going and having fun while you re at it and I want to give a huge thanks for her help and support. I m certain she is one of the main reasons so many people signed up.

Those pitching in included her daughters Emilia (17) and Alana (15), who both attend Alness Academy. Henriette, a web developer at Summit Web Solutions in Inverness, has lived in Evanton for the last 20 years. She admitted fundraising has been a challenge: I am not an outgoing person but all this fundraising for Highland Hospice in the last six months has really made me have to come out of my shell.

“Raising a lot of money for a charity is a challenge in itself. I will not deny it has been hard at times, especially when you have made a great effort for an event and it hardly raises any money at all.

It can really crush you, but then you pick yourself up and get on with it again, and don t give up! And that has been a great lesson to me.

I have also learnt that if you don t ask you don t get, and when do you ask, most people/shops/companies will try and help you in some way.

I can honestly say that I feel a lot more confident in myself and that has come as a complete surprise to me. Her fundraising page can be found at www.justgiving.com/Henriette-Stewart and she s also maintaining a blog which can be found at http://henriettestewart.com/blog/
