Inmarsat : reveals high broadband satcoms for OSVs

Inmarsat has adapted its hybrid VSAT service, Fleet Xpress, for offshore support vessels (OSVs) by offering flexibility in connectivity service levels. This will enable vessel owners to access higher broadband levels through Ka-band coverage from Inmarsats fifth generation of satellites. They can also be assured that connectivity can be maintained when Ka-band is not available through the L-band coverage. As connectivity needs and data usage on board OSVs change over time, Inmarsat has enabled vessel owners to upgrade and downgrade service levels during a 36-month contract period, as data usage when an OSV is on-hire can be far higher than if the vessel is undergoing downtime.Offshore projects can generate considerable volumes of data that need transmitting to shore for analysis. Data usage is also increased by the requirements of onboard third-party contractors and for crew welfare.

But there may not be these requirements if an OSV is off-hire.Inmarsat said committed information rates of up to 3 Mbps for uploads and 6 Mbps for downloads are available through a 1 m diameter Ka-band antenna through Fleet Xpress. If a vessel owner wants to install an enhanced antenna, then these rates can climb to 5 Mbps for upload and 10 Mbps for download. This is in comparison to when an OSV is off-hire when data rates can drop to as low as 128 kbps each way to maintain core operational data exchanges. Inmarsats OSV Fleet Xpress plans allow vessel owners to fluctuate between these data rates during the three-year contract. The new set of OSV plans can be used in conjunction with new hardware from terminal manufacturers that will provide a dual antenna solution to minimise outages caused by line of sight blockages.Blockages are a common occurrence for OSVs due to their proximity to drilling rigs and because they can operate in high sea states.

These systems will be managed by a single antenna control unit that can manage the service and seamlessly switch between antennas.Inmarsat will present these plans and discuss OSV connectivity at Riviera Maritime Medias upcoming Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards and Exhibition in London on 7-8 February.(c) 2018 All Rights Reserved – Mubasher Info 2005 – 2017 Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
