Calif. Mayor Quits Broadband Panel, Decries Industry Tilt

San Jose mayor resigns from FCC broadband committee, says industry has taken over San Jose’s mayor quit the committee in protest today, saying that the telecommunications industry has taken hold of the initiative, and are working hard to advance their own interest at the expense of consumers. “It has become abundantly clear that despite the good intentions of several participants, the industry-heavy makeup of [the committee] will simply relegate the body to being a vehicle for advancing the interests of the telecommunications industry over those of the public”, Liccardo said in his resignation letter[1].

The Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee has been a key part of FCC[2] chairman Ajit Pai’s[3] priority of closing the so-called “digital divide”, particularly when it comes to bringing high-speed internet service to rural and low-income areas.

Shah said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and corruption were two faces of the same coin, reported News18. Shah is scheduled to address a party rally on Thursday. Liccardo said the committee – which has 30 voting members, and only a handful representing cities – seemed most concerned about cost of infrastructure improvements and who would foot the bill: industry or municipalities. “Bridging the digital divide continues to be my top priority, and I look forward to continuing to work with the BDAC and many others to remove regulatory barriers to broadband deployment and to extend digital opportunity to all Americans”.

“This was political well before I ever stepped into it”, the mayor said, “to the extent that we have an administration that’s in the pocket of the industry”. Millions of Americans lack broadband access. Liccardo accused the Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee of providing policy recommendations that give internet service providers “a very favorable hand”, Axios reported[5].

Criticism related to net neutrality has also centered on Pai, as he led the charge to repeal[7] it late previous year. “The apparent goal is to create a set of rules that will provide industry with easy access to publicly-funded infrastructure at taxpayer-subsidized rates, without any obligation to provide broadband access to underserved residents”, the mayor wrote. Opponents say the repeal is nothing but a boon to the telecom industry, while Pai maintains that net neutrality rules are cumbersome and thwart innovation and competition.
