Tutela Study Names EE and Vodafone Best for UK Mobile Broadband
A study of crowd sourced data from Tutela Technologies has found that mobile operator EE delivered the fastest 4G based Mobile Broadband speed and latency in the United Kingdom, although Vodafone came out top for older 3G networks and they also experienced less packet loss. The research, which is based on data gathered between 1st July and 30th September 2017, is understood to work by collecting anonymous usage data from the background of other apps “without affecting the user experience“. Overall the study was able to process data from 118,311,302 records (speed tests etc.), which it collected from an average of around 13,400+ unique devices per day over the 91 day period.
All of the data appears to have been gathered from Smartphones that use the Android operating system and most of it came from those running the v6, v7.0 and v7.1 OS software. Overall EE ranks top, with Vodafone in 2nd place, O2 coming 3rd and Three UK being ranked bottom in 4th position.
The fastest device in the test was Sony’s Xperia XZ phone, which achieved an average download speed of 16.1Mbps on 4G and 5.6Mbps on 3G (note: 3G performance is somewhat limited by network technology and so remains fairly level across different devices).
A more recent study for the August – October period is said to be available, although for some reason it is not available to down. In the meantime you can see the formula that Tutela uses to create their experience index below.
