IoT solutions will come to life in South Africa in 2018

2018 will be the year when Internet of Things (IoT) solutions come to life in South Africa, which will include the convergence of IoT and artificial intelligence. This is according to SqwidNet, which is rolling out an ultra-narrowband Sigfox IoT network in South Africa. SqwidNet plans to achieve nationwide coverage by 2018, and will densify its network to offer deep coverage within buildings.

The increased network coverage will allow many IoT solutions to become available within the security, agriculture, tracking and logistics, and utilities industries. “Platforms are becoming more pervasive across goods tracking, industrial applications, and utilities,” said SqwidNet. These platforms offer cloud presentation and application layer services which showcase real-time live data and trends.

2017 a great year

2017 was an excellent year for SqwidNet’s network growth, and it achieved 78% population coverage in less than a year.

“We will continue rolling out the network to achieve 85% population coverage by end of 2017,” said the company.

While SqwidNet focused on a successful network rollout in 2017, it also managed to secure orders for tens of thousands of devices – which means it is already starting to generate revenue.

Its achievements were recognised at AfricaCom, where it won the IoT product of the year for 2017.
