Cybersmart in aggressive fibre drive

The increased uptake of 4K media streaming in South Africa is going to drive demand for faster fibre-to-the-home products. This is according to Cybersmart CTO Laurie Fialkov, who told MyBroadband what he expects to see in the local broadband market in 2018. Fialkov said major retailers, tech brands, and streaming players are aggressively promoting new 4K TVs and UHD broadcasts, with many consumers investing in the technology.

With local linear broadcasts typically only offered in 720p, consumers often turn to streaming services to enjoy 4K content. To ensure a good 4K streaming experience, Fialkov said a connection speed of 20Mbps is a minimum requirement. This means many people who are currently on lines under 20Mbps will look to upgrade their service.

Cybersmart well positioned

Fialkov said Cybersmart is well positioned to capitalise on the need for faster fibre products, as all its services offer speeds of at least 20Mbps.

The company has built internal trenching and reticulation teams this year, which makes it possible for it to roll out fibre infrastructure much faster – and at a fraction of the cost of outsourced solutions. The company has also received additional funding, which will be used to extend its Lightspeed fibre network. The increased efficiency and network optimisations make it possible for Cybersmart to offer a 400Mbps capped fibre service for R399 per month.

The company also plans to offer aggressively-priced 20Mbps uncapped products in the residential and business markets.

To further enhance its fibre offering, Cybersmart is allowing ISPs onto its open-access platform.

The Cybersmart platform allows ISPs to create new products on demand – something which no other local open-access product supports.
