Hardware

The Mate 10 Pro and iPhone X boast the latest processors, capable of driving high-quality graphics and advanced AI features. The Mate 10 Pro is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970 chip, which includes a 12-core GPU and octa-core CPU.

It also includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which drives its artificial intelligence features. The iPhone X is one of the first Apple devices to feature the company’s A11 Bionic processor. It offers increased performance and power efficiency over previous chips and includes support for the phone’s Face ID system.

Both devices also sport OLED displays with high pixel densities.

Features

One of the standout features of the iPhone X is its design, with nearly the entire front of the device taken up by its display. The iPhone X also signifies a new design direction for Apple, with a home button and fingerprint reader not present on the new smartphone.

The front camera array is another new feature, which allows users to authenticate their identity through facial recognition. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro also does not feature a physical home button, but retains its fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. Key features of the Mate 10 Pro lie in its AI capabilities and NPU chip, which allow the device to perform AI computation on the hardware – as opposed to cloud-based computing.

Users can leverage this AI processing power by automatically adjusting image quality using scene and object recognition when taking a photo, or translating text in real-time through the camera lens. Huawei’s AI platform for the Mate 10 Pro is open to developers and companies.

Pricing

Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro is priced at R17,999 and is available from the Huawei Store, Vodacom, Telkom, MTN, and Cell C. Huawei also offers a Porsche Design version of the smartphone, which is priced at R26,999.

No official South African pricing for the iPhone X has been announced as yet, but the device is expected to sell for over R20,000 when it launches on 24 November.
