Ghosts of Tsushima release date, platforms, gameplay and trailer

Following the hugely successful Infamous series, Sucker Punch Productions has revealed its new project: Ghosts of Tsushima. It’s an open-world game set in Japan in the 1200s where you take on the role of a Samurai defending against the terrifying Mongol Empire – sounds great, right? Here’s everything we know so far about Ghosts of Tsushima, including release date predictions, platforms, gameplay and the reveal trailer which can be seen above.

If you’re interested in other highly-anticipated games, take a look at our roundup of the best upcoming games[1].

Ghosts of Tsushima: Release date rumours

So, when is the incredibly exciting Ghosts of Tsushima being released? Sadly, there was no release date given during the game’s PGW 2017 reveal. In fact, there wasn’t even a broad release window of 2018 provided, leading us to suggest that the game is still in the early stages of development despite Game Director Nate Fox claiming that the team has been working on the game “for the last few years”.

The lack of a release date window – and the fact that the trailer lacked any actual gameplay – suggests to us that we’re still a long way away from getting our hands on the game. Ghosts of Tsushima might come out in 2018, but we’re predicting a 2019 release based on that information.

Ghosts of Tsushima: Platforms

While the platform availability for the upcoming Ghosts of Tsushima is yet to be announced, we assume that Sony’s PS4 will have some kind of exclusivity – why else would the game be announced during Sony’s PS4 showcase?

It’s possible that it could be a PS4 exclusive like Sucker Punch’s Infamous series, although we’d imagine Sony would’ve bragged about the exclusivity at announcement if that was the case. If it’s not a platform exclusive, we expect Ghosts of Tsushima to be available on PS4[2], Xbox One[3] and PC when it’s (eventually) released. While we’re hopeful of a Nintendo Switch[4] port, similar open world games like Assassin’s Creed Origins[5] never made an appearance on the hybrid console, so we wouldn’t hold our breath.

Ghosts of Tsushima: Story and gameplay

While little is known about what you’ll be doing in Ghosts of Tsushima, the reveal trailer and accompanying blog post[6] did provide us with a bit of information about the setting of the game. Set in Tsushima, Japan in 1274, you take on the role of a legendary Samurai warrior defending the island against the fearsome Mongol Empire. The Empire is wreaking havoc and terrorising the local population, and as one of the last surviving Samurai warriors, you fight back and build the legend of the Ghost of Tsushima using old samurai traditions and unconventional skills.

It’ll be set in an interactive open world according to Sucker Punch Productions, allowing you to explore the war-torn island of Tsushima however you want. You’ll have access not only to the legendary Katana sword favoured by the Samurai, but also a six-foot-tall long bow and other stealthy weapons to help you take down enemies in your path. Beyond that, details are unclear.

It’s early days though, and Sucker Punch has promised a steady stream of information over the next few months, so make sure you head back soon for all the latest Ghosts of Tsushima news.
