14 existing Redrow developments to be retro-fitted with FTTC
Newspaper stories with the public complaining that they’ve spend many many GBP1,000’s on a new home to move in and find out that the broadband is only 1 to 2 Mbps have been a staple diet for ‘tech’ journalists over the last few years and todays news will mean that there are 14 developments where this will not be possible. Redrow and Openreach has reached a co-funding deal that will bring FTTC/VDSL2 to some 14 developments comprising 3,000 properties bringing up to 38 Mbps and up to 76 Mbps speed options. The news today is that the agreement has been reached and with the amount of full fibre and FTTP in build across the country the first cabinets are not expected to be live until October 2018.
So still plenty of scope for press stories complaining about how slow the roll-outs are.
When the homes at these sites were first planned – they were not within the scope of any commercial or government investment plans for fibre broadband. We saw the potential of a national co-funding agreement with Openreach for homes we’d previously built that had lower than average broadband speeds. We wanted to improve our customers’ experience in homes that don’t have the benefit of full fibre technology.

For new estates in the pipeline Redrow is signed up to the programme where Openreach offer free FTTP builds to developments of 30 or more properties and as we’ve seen on our forums sometimes people have moved into new homes before the FTTP network was ready for service so a new ‘framework agreement’ that will keep Openreach up to date on when new batches of properties will be added to estates will be welcomed. Of course full fibre is not just available from Openreach, we know of at least 21,000 new build homes with full fibre via IFNL/SeeTheLight, Virgin Media is popping up as the developer of choice on some developments and in city centre apartments Hyperoptic is a common choice.
It is just a shame that it is only now in 2017 that we are seeing decent broadband become much more of a default in new properties.
When the original Digital Britain report was published in 2009 making superfast broadband a pre-requisite for new build properties that long ago would have been a major step to encouraging full fibre roll-outs and even today with all the improvements and rhetoric there is still nothing that guarantees new build properties will have decent broadband.
The 14 developments that will benefit once the VDSL2 service is live are:

- Park View in Hinckley, Leicestershire
- Hamilton Gardens, in Leicester
- Warren Grove & Warren Farm in Dawlish, Devon
- Bishops Court in Exeter, Devon
- Claro Road in Harrogate, Yorkshire
- Woodlands in Horsforth Vale, Yorkshire
- Saxon Grange within Sherburn in Elmet, Yorkshire
- Manor View in Treharris, Wales
- The Grange in Wenvoe, Wales
- Southbank in Newton Kyme, Yorkshire
- Ashdown Vale in Bognor Regis, West Sussex
