Samsung launches 1.2Gbps LTE modem
Samsung has developed an LTE modem which supports six carrier aggregation (6CA). The new technology has achieved a maximum downlink speed of 1.2Gbps, said Samsung. Earlier this year, the Samsung Exynos 9 Series (8895) SoC featured a Cat.16 LTE modem with 1 gigabit downlink speed and the industry’s first 5CA support.
Samsung said its new Cat.18 6CA LTE modem technology achieves up to 1.2Gbps. Carrier aggregation combines several component carriers with various bandwidths to improve data transfer rates and network performance. In addition to carrier aggregation, the modem supports 4×4 Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output antenna design and the higher-order 256 quadrature amplitude modulation scheme.
It can also use enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access to aggregate licensed and unlicensed spectrum, such as that used by Wi-Fi.
Samsung said it expects to have a mobile processor which adopts its Cat.18 LTE modem in mass production by the end of 2017.
