As is standard in the Battlefield series, there will be a series of four expansion packs for Battlefield 1 released within a year of the game’s initial release. EA claims that the four pieces of DLC will add a total of 16 multiplayer maps, new Operations and game modes, new Elite classes, 20 new weapons and more to the existing game.
Here’s where we bring you the latest release date and gameplay news for each one.
In the Name of the Tsar DLC
This summer’s update for Battlefield 1 is called In the Name of the Tsar and will include a female soldier. It will focus on the Russian Army and will bring a new class into the multiplayer shooter: the Russian Scout. “The Women’s Battalion of Death is represented by the Russian Scout class.” said the official Twitter account. More details will be announced at EA Play which takes place at the same time as E3 2017.
Giant’s Shadow DLC news and rumours
Before the arrival of the paid DLC, all Battlefield 1 players were treated to free DLC in the form of Giant’s Shadow. Giant’s Shadow was released in December 2016, and features a brand new multiplayer map based on the Battle of the Selle in autumn 1918.
“The British forces have broken through the Hindenburg line and are now in pursuit towards an important railway center,” reads the Battlefield 1 website. “Fierce infantry and tank engagements ensue on the open ground and river banks alongside the Cateu-Wassigny railway.”
They Shall Not Pass release date: 28 March 2017 The first paid DLC, dubbed They Shall Not Pass, focuses on France and will feature four new maps based on the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Soissons. “Around 1 million shells were fired in the opening barrage of the Battle of Verdun,” the developers wrote in a blog post. “This created massive forest fires around the fortified city and the battlefields surrounding it.
Soldiers tell stories of being able to see these fires from far away. We really wanted to capture this initial fighting in a battle that came to be known as the Devil’s Anvil.” Along with the new maps, the update will also feature new weapons, game modes, elite classes, tanks and for the first time, introduce the French Army as a playable faction – fitting given the major role they played in the war.
Turning Tides DLC news and release date
Turning Tides release date: TBC As the name suggests, Turning Tides will focus on water-based warfare during World War 1. The DLC will bring with it a myriad of new ships available to battle at sea, along with new planes to help gain the edge.
While not much else is known, EA says it’ll be based on the 1918 Zeebrugge raid in Belgium, and the first days of the Gallipoli offensive in the 1915 Ottoman empire.
Apocalypse DLC news and release date
Apocalypse release date: TBC Apocalypse seems to be the most peculiar piece of paid DLC for Battlefield 1, as the name seems to suggest some kind of zombie tie-in (especially with recent zombie-like sounds found within one of the They Shall Not Pass maps) but this is yet to be confirmed by EA. We’re not so sure either, as it wouldn’t fit with the serious, sobering tone of the game.
What the company does say is that it’ll feature the most infamous battles of WW1, conquering bitterly contested ground with unique tools and weapons “born out of desperation and deadlock“. It should be brutal, with EA promising “Never before have the nightmarish horrors of the Great War been closer as you descend into hell“. No release date just yet, but we expect it to drop at some point near to the first anniversary of the game, around September-October 2017.
As well as releasing the above DLC, DICE recently switched to a monthly update schedule.
To celebrate this, the company is releasing a brand new multiplayer map for all Battlefield 1 players. The new map is called “Prise de Tahure”, and is set in the autumn following the Nivelle Offensive. Here’s how the company describes the upcoming multiplayer map:
“Prise de Tahure sees French troops desperately holding on to re-captured heights in the Butte-de-Tahure region. The frontline trench networks cut right through several villages facing obliteration from the constant skirmishing between German stormtroopers and French raiders. This is a war of attrition.
Adaptability and tactics are the means to wear your adversary down.”
The company also announced that Premium Pass owners would get access to a night-time map in June.
Dubbed “Nivelle Nights”, the map is located in the battlefields around Malmaison and Soupir, and provides a number of new challenges (including visibility) when compared other BF1 maps.
