Heather Humphreys, the minister for rural and regional affairs, is resisting a move by communications minister Denis Naughten to bring responsibility for rural broadband back to the Department of Communications. Officials in Naughten’s and Humphreys’ departments are due to hold talks later this month to decide who will be in charge of the postal service and the introduction of high-speed broadband. Enda Kenny, the taoiseach, gave Humphreys’ department partial responsibility for both last year, in an effort to put a political focus on rural Ireland through a single cabinet portfolio.
