New FCC Broadband Mapping Tool to Advance Fight against Costly Chronic Disease
The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD)1 today cohosted a launch event with the Federal Communications Commission’s Connect2Health Task Force (C2H)2 for the FCC’s (News3 – Alert4) new Mapping Broadband Health in America tool. The tool enables more efficient, data-driven decision making at the intersection of broadband and health and promotes stakeholder collaboration by allowing users to uncover useful information about the relationship between broadband and health down to the county level. PFCD Chairman Ken Thorpe made the following statement of support for the FCC C2H effort:
With more than one in two Americans living with at least one chronic disease, we urgently need programs and policies that can deiver positive results in the fight against the number one cause of death, disability and rising health care costs in our country. PFCD has long supported efforts that convene stakeholders in both the public and private sector to uncover gaps and to prioritize resources to improve overall health and wellbeing. Technology is often at the center of solutions, but for those solutions to reach all who could benefit, broadband connectivity is essential.
While illustrating that there is much work to be done, the data provided by the FCC’s powerful mapping tool could serve as a solid foundation for the development and implementation of health care infrastructure that improves access to quality health care, enhances efforts to eliminate health disparities, and helps to identify feasible channels for telehealth and telemedicine innovations. Connected care is critical in the fight against chronic disease, particularly for the millions of Americans struggling to manage multiple chronic conditions. Arming our policy makers, community leaders, health care professionals, and entrepreneurs with data on the relationship between broadband and health is an important step towards maximizing advanced technologies to help millions of Americans regardless of their county of residence to achieve better health.
