Samsung HX-MTD15EQ – External 1.5TB Mobile Wireless Media
It is Seagate build and badged as Samsung. Unfortunately, I was swayed by the apparent Samsung branding. The unit will no longer function as a WiFi hotspot (despite all of the reset procedures and battery charging cycles). This is a huge problem if you have bought this product as your primary backup device.
The only solution offered by Seagate is a product return. So any customer experiencing non-functioning WiFi has to wipe the drive and compromise their backup facility for the period of return. These data security capable hybrid products should be treated differently to other forms of electronics (the replacement should be sent in advance of the return). I am now faced with the need to buy additional storage media to take the back-up for the period of the return procedure.
If you are wanting a device that can be accessed over WiFi by third-party file management android apps – look eleswhere! The technology is under-developed at present. Android users that are looking for a large storage capacity that can easily be accessed through a third party file management app (like File Explorer or Solid Explorer) will be sorely disappointed. There just is not enough functionality in the Samsung app, and the superior third-party Android apps cannot read the drive over the WiFi.
The functionality that ought to be available with this product is achievable if it is connected to a HooToo TM02 mobile router. Free exchange of files by means of android third party file management apps is in fact possible. When are Seagate going to provide this level of capability in a WiFi HDD?
Very disappointing … and I will not be surprised if it is withdrawn from the market by Seagate.

The drive connects using Wi-Fi, creating a network for you ( you don’t need an existing Wi-Fi- network to use this – perfect for out and about ) and I’ve tested it at a range of over 20 metres in different rooms. It copes well even at this distance and so far there have been no interruptions to anything I’ve watched. Setup is easy, I have the drive formatted to use on a Mac and files are dragged and dropped onto it. Transfer times are quick the 1.5 TB of storage means I can squeeze lots of movies and TV shows on it without worry about their size.
There is a slight whirr from the drive when it’s first called into action but settles down afterwards and cannot be heard during movie playback. I have a 16gb Xperia tablet and with limited storage like this, the Samsung wireless mobile media product is ideal as an expansion.
I managed to time it right and got it for £90 through Amazon but would happily pay £120 for it. Very pleased customer! Any questions, drop me a comment. Hope this helps
