D-Link DAP-1320/B – WIRELESS N 300 RANGE EXTENDER – – WIRELESS REPEATER UK
Setup is easy, with the device coming with a default Wifi network. You then connect to that network with a browser or mobile app and configure the device. However, I found a few things annoying about the device. Firstly, it had no option for dealing with WiFi networks with hidden SSIDs: even if you unhide the network and configure the extender it still requires the WiFi network to broadcast the SSID to work correctly. So if you want to use it with a hidden SSID you will be out of luck.
Secondly it isn’t very clear what the device is doing with regard to 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. My original router broadcasts at 2.4GHz and 5GHz and from testing I can see that the extender can pick up either of these and also broadcasts can broadcast in 2.4GHz and 5GHz – however, a bit more information and control over the this area would help. Does the extender default to extend only the 2.4GHz signal if both are available with the same name? I don’t know, and I’ve not been able to find out.
It still gets 4 stars because it does the basic job well with the minimum of fuss. Personally I would have preferred it if it had rather more advanced controls, but no-one else in my family (who are benefitting from the extended network) actually cares about those details.
