Appeal for witnesses following fatal accident

GRAMPIAN Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal crash on the A90 on Friday.

At 4.11pm on Friday 8 March 2013, emergency services attended the A90, south of Fordoun, Laurencekirk where a silver Vauxhall Astra estate and a black SAAB 93 estate had collided. As a result of the collision two men aged 61 and 42 years of age, who were passengers in one of the vehicles died. The two drivers aged 58 and 39 years of age were respectively taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, where they were treated for various fractures, their conditions described as serious but not life threatening.

The road was closed to allow collision investigation and following the removal of the vehicles and the surface being cleaned, it was reopened fully at 12.30am on Saturday 9 March. Diversions had been put in place, though considerable congestion was caused in the area. Inspector Kevin Wallace, the Senior Investigating Officer stated This has been a tragic incident which has impacted on a number of families, the thoughts of myself and my staff are with them at this time.

It is important that we establish the sequence of events which led to this collision and we need the assistance of the public in this respect. We know there were a number of cars on this section of road prior to and at the time of the collision, including a number using the junctions giving access to Auchenblae and Tulloch. I am aware that some drivers using the road were returning home after working in the North East during the week and indeed those who had been outwith the area, I am keen to reach out to them and secure their assistance.

Every person in the area at the time will be able to help us build an accurate picture of the events.

I would urge those individuals to contact Grampian Police or their local Police Force through the non emergency telephone number 101 and allow us to record and consider what they saw.

I would also like to thank the public for their cooperation and patience during the initial emergency response to this collision and the subsequent road closure.
